Marcus crossed the garden to stand with Chloe. “Exactly, an opposite side of the same coin.”

“What are you saying?” Chloe’s voice was the most dragon-like Allie had ever heard.

“My daughter has bonded with her Complement, hasn’t she?” Marcus directed the question at Allie.

“My sister is happily married, yes.” Allie put herself between Fei Long and Marcus.

“Certain … effects of some gifts … very powerful gifts, can often be reversed.” He leaned down to Chloe’s level. “And I know how it’s done.”

“You’re saying you can bring her back?” Chloe asked, and Fei Long shrieked in outrage, like a mother trying to protect her child. She tried to get between Chloe and Marcus, but Chloe had learned to control Fei Long and refused to let her.

“Not to her body. But there are ways she can return.”

“She wouldn’t want that!” Allie screamed the moment she realized Chloe would fall for it.

Chloe turned toward Allie, the fire of her dragon raging inside her. “Go.”

White hot fire erupted from Chloe’s mouth, scorching the ground between them. “Chloe, this is how it will happen,” Allie shouted over the roar of the flames. “Remember Justice and his painting.” But Chloe shook her head, turning back to Marcus. Fei Long faded into a wisp of golden vapor, and it was just Allie and her parents standing by the garden shed.

“Going somewhere Ms. Carmichael?” Marcus sent his remaining minion after them, taking Chloe with him.

“Hurry.” Briggs’ form shimmered in and out of focus. He reached for the trap door in the floor of the shed. “I can’t hold onto the dreamworld much longer.”

“Mom, Dad, you go first.” Allie’s hands trembled as she tried to punch in the code. The room swam around her, and her head throbbed. Something was wrong. She didn’t feel right.

Lily and Carson ignored her, moving around the shed, flipping switches and punching in codes on panels she’d never seen before. She watched mystified as they retrieved magnetized weapons from the garden box where they kept fresh soil.

“We need to move quickly.” Lily tossed Allie a flashlight, but it clattered to the ground before she could catch it.

Thick metal slabs slid from the walls, enclosing them in a steel box before Marcus’ bodyguard could get to them.

Darkness flooded the room, and as soon as she knew they were safe, Allie collapsed to the floor.
